Certainly, one of the first things that come to mind when you think of mobile navigation is probably an app, such as Google Maps or Open Street Map particularly in Europe. Today those apps are an indispensable companion in daily life. However, those apps are only convenient for citizens without any impairment, but might prove to be rather frustrating for individuals with physical impairment, such as people bound to a wheelchair. With WheelScout our intention is to increase the quality of life, by giving them back a little bit of independence allowing them to make their way alone without the need of additional help. It is a project that intends to provide a navigational system for people who are bound on a wheelchair. This means that barriers, such as stairways, steep inclines or tight tracks should be taken into consideration and be avoided depending on the level of impairment during the routing process.

Heutzutage sind sie im Alltag ein unverzichtbarer Begleiter. Wenn man jedoch an körperlichen Einschränkungen leidet, können diese praktischen Hilfsmittel sehr schnell frustrierend für die Betroffenen, wie zum Beispiel Rollstuhlfahrer, werden. Mit WheelScout wollen wir den Betroffenen ein wenig Lebensqualität zurückgeben, in dem wir ihnen die Möglichkeit geben, ihren Weg selbstständig, ohne zusätzliche Hilfe, zu bestreiten. Wheelscout ist ein Projekt mit dem Ziel, ein Navigationssystem für Menschen, die an einen Rollstuhl gebunden sind, zur Verfügung zu stellen. Erreicht werden soll das, durch Berücksichtigung von Barrieren wie Treppen, steilen Steigungen oder engen Gassen, sodass jene abhängig vom jeweiligen Grad der körperlichen Einschränkung mit in die Routenberechnung einfließt.

Questo sistema di navigazione informa l’utente disabile sulle barriere architettoniche che trova nel suo percorso, come per esempio scale, salite o stradine strettissime etc. e secondo il grado dell’invalidità il sistema calcola il percorso migliore.
